Seed Science & Technology
Short Course Schedule
The Seed Sciece & Technology Short Course will take place Wednesday, November 13 through Friday, November 15, starting daily at 8:00 am.
NOTE: Agenda is subject to change.
Morning Sessions
- Welcome & Overview of Short Course with Gary Munkvold, Iowa State University
- Introduction to Seed Treatment with Gary Munkvold, Iowa State University
Dr. Munkvold will kick off the day with a comprehensive introduction to seed treatment, covering the general benefits, target organisms, and the growing role of biologicals in the market. This session will provide a solid foundation for understanding the essential aspects of seed treatment, setting the stage for more advanced discussions throughout the day. - Introduction to Application Rates and Developing Customized Recipes with Mike Gehlsen, Syngenta’s SeedCare Institute
In this session we will explore determining application rates based on product, slurry volume, and seed size. We will also investigate additional components we are seeing emerge in the seed treatment marketplace and recommendations for their application. - Seed Treatments & Coatings with Gerard Denny, Incotec
Gerard Denny will discuss the latest advancements in seed treatments and coatings. He will explore new technologies and trends that are shaping the future of seed enhancement, focusing on how these innovations can improve seed performance and crop yield. Following the presentation, Gerard will join the group on the tour of Incotec, offering a hands-on look at the technologies discussed.
Afternoon Industry Tour
Morning Sessions
- The Seed Production Process with Dr. David Dornbos
The financial success of a seed company is closely tied to the cost of seed production (COGP). This presentation will explore key strategies to reduce COGP, from crop planning and grower selection to pollination control and post-harvest processing. By optimizing these areas, seed companies can enhance seed quality, manage production risks, and improve overall profitability. - Seed Facility Design with Jeff Elwer, Keen Project Solutions
Guidelines for expanding existing and building new seed production facilities. Site selection, design parameters, regulatory challenges, and tips for your new facility. - Seed Processing in Re-Export Countries with Rick Winn, HM Clause
Vegetable seed industry processes or conditions a multitude of species using specialized equipment and procedures developed over centuries. Each species has it own characteristics and must be handled carefully to satisfy the demanding growers who produce our world’s vegetables for consumption. This presentation gives a brief overview and can introduce one to the details of post-harvest handling of many vegetable seed species.
Afternoon Industry Tour
Syngenta – Parent Seed Production Facility, 2349 330th St, Slater, IA
Morning Sessions
- Phenotypic Plasticity with Jianming Yu, Iowa State University
Dr. Yu’s presentation on phenotypic plasticity will explore how environmental changes are impacting plant breeding and seed production. He will discuss the adaptability of plants to varying conditions and the implications for breeding strategies. - Seed Physiology with Susana Goggi, Iowa State University
This presentation will cover key topics in seed physiology, with a special focus on pollination. Dr. Goggi will explore the critical role of pollination in ensuring seed purity and quality, while addressing the physiological factors that influence seed development and vigor.
